Operating as an OON private practice gives us the freedom to provide a level of 1-on-1 care focused on treating the whole person, not just the condition. Navigating the complexities of the lymphatic system and cancer care can be challenging. We focus on compassionate, holistic, client-centered care without the timelines of insurance companies. With our self-pay model, we’re not bound by restrictions and visit limits - which means your care is guided entirely by what’s best for you, not what your policy allows. We are able to address the earliest signs of chronic edema through long-term recovery. We are dedicated to providing knowledgeable, preventative strategies, and specialized therapy to re-claim your well-being, promote lasting health and long term management strategies.

Do I need a referral to make an appointment?

Accepted Answer

No! Rhode Island is a direct-access state for Occupational Therapy, meaning you can schedule an evaluation and begin care immediately without waiting for a doctor's referral or prescription.Note on insurance: While you do not need a referral to be evaluated or treated at South County Lymphatics & Wellness, some commercial insurance carriers require a physician's prescription on file if you plan to submit your Superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. When you call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card, ask them: 'Does my plan require a doctor's prescription or referral on file for out-of-network Occupational Therapy (CPT code 97165/97110) to apply toward my deductible or be reimbursed?' If your insurer requires one, we can easily provide a brief request letter or evaluation summary for your primary care doctor to sign off on.

I don't think I can afford to pay out of pocket. What are my options?

We provide transparent, tailored pricing, as well as treatment packages to help you save on ongoing care. We don't need to commit to months of rigid, twice-a-week therapy upfront; instead, we can start with a thorough evaluation to look at what's going on, relieve any tenderness, and put you back in the driver's seat with a plan that fits your life. To help offset the cost, I'll provide detailed medical Superbills with all the required procedure and diagnosis codes, which you can easily submit online to your insurance so those payments apply toward your out-of-network deductible or come back to you as direct reimbursement.Superbills: At the end of your visit (or monthly), we can provide you with an itemized medical Superbill containing all standard diagnosis and procedure codes (CPT/ICD-10 codes). You can submit this directly to your commercial insurance provider online for out-of-network reimbursement or credit toward your deductible.HSA / FSA: You can use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) card to pay for therapy sessions and qualifying medical supplies.

Your first visit is a comprehensive, 1-on-1 initial evaluation designed to give you clarity and relief. We start by sitting down together to listen to your story—including your medical history, surgical background, symptoms, and what you hope to achieve. You'll learn what your lymphatic system is and how it works.Depending on your needs, we will conduct a gentle physical assessment. This may include evaluating tissue quality, measuring limb volume or range of motion, assessing scar tissue, and checking joint mobility of the affected area in order to track your progress over time. We will never rush you or push through pain. Before you leave, you’ll receive personalized education, initial symptom-relief strategies or home techniques, and a clear, collaborative plan tailored to your life and schedule.

Why should I see a lymphedema therapist before starting my breast cancer treatment?

Establishing a baseline before surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy is the most effective way to protect your long-term mobility and catch lymphedema early.  This proactive approach is called the Prospective Surveillance Model. Rather than waiting for visible swelling or discomfort to appear after treatment, we meet with you before your procedures begin to evaluate your baseline limb measurements, range of motion, and tissue health.How a Pre-Treatment Visit Protects Your Recovery:Establishes Your Unique "Normal": Everyone’s anatomy and arm volumes are naturally slightly asymmetrical. Having precise baseline measurements before surgery allows us to detect subtle, subclinical fluid changes later on—long before they are visible to the naked eye.  Enables Early Intervention: Research shows that catching lymphatic congestion in its earliest, subclinical stage (Stage 0 or Stage 1) allows for simple, conservative care—like temporary light compression or targeted movement—that can often reverse early fluid accumulation and prevent chronic lymphedema from developing.  Prepares You for Post-Surgical Recovery: We review gentle mobility exercises, post-operative skin care, and scar management techniques before your surgery so you feel confident, prepared, and supported at every stage of your treatment.Creates a Seamless Lifeline of Care: You establish a direct relationship with a dedicated therapist who will monitor your progress at regular intervals throughout your cancer journey, ensuring you never have to navigate post-treatment changes alone.

I notice mild swelling at the end of the day (like sock indentations) that goes away by morning. Should I reach out?

Catching and managing swelling in its earliest stages is the single best way to protect your tissue and prevent long-term fluid buildup.That "end-of-day" tightness or deep sock mark that disappears overnight is often a classic sign of early-stage (Stage 0 or Stage 1) lymphatic congestion or mild venous insufficiency. Because your lymphatic system works harder against gravity during the day, fluid naturally accumulates in your lower legs, resting while elevated overnight gives your system a temporary chance to catch up.You do not need to wait until swelling becomes permanent or uncomfortable to seek help. An early assessment allows us to evaluate your circulatory and lymphatic flow, identify underlying triggers, and give you simple, proactive management strategies (like targeted movement, elevation techniques, or light support) so small fluctuations don't turn into chronic issues.

Your care plan depends entirely on your specific situation—including your diagnosis, surgical history, how long symptoms have been present, and your personal goals.During your initial evaluation, we will identify the root drivers of your symptoms and build a plan of care tailored to you. Some clients find clarity and relief in just a few targeted sessions with a strong home routine, while others benefit from more intensive, hands-on care before transitioning to maintenance check-ins. You will always have full visibility and control over your care plan, and we will continuously reassess your progress to ensure every session serves a clear purpose for your life.

What should I expect during my first cancer rehab appointment?

What does a typical lymphedema treatment session look like?

A typical lymphedema treatment session is built around Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)—the gold standard in lymphedema management. Every session is tailored to your body's specific tissue state on that day, combining four core pillars of care in a relaxed, 1-on-1 setting:Check-In & Tissue Assessment: We start every session by reviewing how your body responded to the previous visit and discussing your symptom levels at home.Skin & Tissue Inspection: We check for changes in swelling, skin integrity, dryness, or signs of irritation.Progress Tracking: We feel the tissue texture (noting areas of softness or firmness/fibrosis) and take periodic circumferential or volume measurements to track your progress over time.We start every session by reviewing how your body responded to the previous visit and discussing your symptom levels at home.Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): MLD is a specialized, very light-touch manual technique—not a deep tissue massage.Clearing the Pathways: We begin by gently stimulating healthy lymph nodes (typically near the neck, collarbone, or unaffected side) to clear the "drainage pathways."Rerouting Fluid: Using rhythmic, gentle skin-stretching strokes, we encourage trapped lymphatic fluid to flow away from congested areas toward those healthy, open pathways.Skin Care & Inspection: Healthy skin is the first line of defense against infection (cellulitis) in areas affected by lymphedema.Cleansing & Hydration: We inspect for micro-cracks, tiny cuts, or fungal changes, applying low-pH, hypoallergenic moisturizers to restore the skin barrier.Education: We review best practices for protecting your skin at home during daily activities.Compression Therapy: Compression provides gentle, continuous pressure to prevent fluid from rushing back into the area after MLD.In-Session Application: Depending on where you are in your care plan (decongestive phase vs. maintenance phase), this may involve multi-layer short-stretch bandaging, specialized foam padding to soften firm tissue, or fitted compression wraps.Garment Assessment: If you use flat-knit or circular-knit daily compression garments, we check their fit, wear, and ease of donning/doffing.Decongestive Exercise & Home Strategy: Movement acts as a natural pump for the lymphatic system, especially when combined with compression.Targeted Movement: We guide you through gentle, low-impact muscle-pumping exercises, deep diaphragmatic breathing, and range-of-motion stretches designed to move fluid without causing fatigue or pain.
