chronic swelling
Lymphedema
Lymphedema causes chronic swelling when the lymphatic system is damaged. South County Lymphatics offers gold-standard Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), using manual drainage, compression, skin care, and exercise to decrease limb volume. We empower you with professional skills to manage your health and achieve long-term comfort.

1. The Heavy Feeling
How it feels: Your limb feels unusually heavy, full, or tight, especially by the end of the day.
What it means: This is often Stage 0 or 1, where fluid is beginning to pool but structural changes haven't occurred yet.
4. Skin Hardening
How it feels: The area feels dense, firm, leathery, or 'woody' and may restrict your normal range of motion.
What it means: Stagnant fluid leads to fibrosis (tissue hardening). CDT can help soften and break up this tissue accumulation.
IDENTIFYING THE SIGNS
Common Symptoms of Lymphedema
The lymphatic system is your body’s natural drainage network. When lymph nodes are damaged, protein-rich fluid can get trapped in the tissues, causing chronic swelling known as lymphedema. Identifying these early warning signs is the first step toward successful management.
2. Clothing Tightness
How it feels: Rings, watches, or socks leave deep indentations, or one sleeve suddenly feels tighter than the other.
What it means: Asymmetry is a classic indicator of gradual lymphatic fluid accumulation.
5. Frequent Infections
How it feels: Recurring redness, warmth, or pain (cellulitis) from minor scratches or bug bites.
What it means: Protein-rich fluid is a breeding ground for bacteria. Therapy focuses on skin care and risk reduction.
3. Skin Denting (Pitting)
How it feels: Pressing your thumb firmly into the area leaves a visible dent that slowly fills back in.
What it means: Known as pitting edema, this indicates fluid is still mobile and highly responsive to therapy.
Am I At Risk?
Secondary: Cancer treatments, lymph node removal, radiation, or major surgeries.
Primary: Congenital or hereditary issues where the system has fewer drainage pathways.
