Understanding Lipedema
Lipedema is a chronic and progressive medical condition characterized by a symmetrical buildup of adipose tissue (fat), primarily in the legs and sometimes the arms. Unlike general obesity, lipedema fat is often resistant to diet and exercise and can cause significant physical discomfort and emotional distress.
Common Signs & Symptoms
- Symmetrical swelling in the legs, hips, or buttocks (hands and feet usually remain unaffected).
- A "cuffing" effect at the ankles or wrists.
- A feeling of heaviness, tightness, or fatigue in the limbs
- Tenderness or pain when pressure is applied to the affected areas.
- Skin that feels soft, doughy, or has a nodular, "pebbly" texture
- Easy bruising, even from minor bumps
- Little to no change in the affected areas despite diet and exercise
- Swelling that does not improve — or worsens — throughout the day
- Fat deposits that feel like small, bean-like nodules under the skin.
- Changes in gait or joint pain due to the weight and distribution of tissue.
- Disproportionate fat buildup in the legs, hips, buttocks, and/or arms, typically sparing the hands and feet
- Family history of lipedema or similar fat-distribution patterns
Note: not everyone will experience every symptom, and symptoms can range from mild to severe. This list is for general awareness and isn't a substitute for a professional evaluation. Lipedema is frequently misdiagnosed as lymphedema or general obesity. Professional evaluation is essential for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate specialized management.

Lipedema Care: Specialized Approach
The management of lipedema requires a multifaceted and highly specialized approach. At South County Lymphatics, we focus on conservative treatments that aim to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and prevent disease progression. Our goal is to empower patients with the tools and knowledge needed to manage their condition effectively and improve their quality of life.
Comprehensive Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is often considered the gold standard for managing symptoms. This includes manual lymphatic drainage to stimulate fluid movement, specialized compression garments to support tissues, and skin care to prevent complications. Additionally, we provide guidance on anti-inflammatory nutrition and low-impact movement strategies specifically tailored for lipedema patients. We understand that living with lipedema can be challenging, and our supportive environment is designed to address both the physical and emotional aspects of your journey toward wellness.
